Tyler Murphy, 25, of Islip, was charged on Friday, May 3, after school officials notified the school resource officer of an incident during which he inappropriately touched a female student around 8:20 p.m., Thursday, May 2, at the school at 2508 Union Blvd, said the Suffolk County Police.
The school resource officer then contacted Special Victims detectives about the incident and following an investigation, Murphy was charged with sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
Murphy will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on a later date.
The Islip School District said that Murphy, who worked as a Junior Varsity baseball coach, and not as a teacher had been relieved of his coaching duties.
"Effective immediately James Lynch will become the head coach for the remainder of the season," the district said.
Murphy, a former student at Islip High School, played baseball for Adelphi University before his graduation.
